About the Program
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting is a professional undergraduate degree in the Visual Arts. Adhering to the College’s strong general education requirements, accredited by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) and building from a strong foundation in observational drawing, design, and color theory, our BFA painting program is designed to contextualize a studio practice within an art historical context, with a focus on progressive representational and contemporary figurative art. Through the sequence of drawing and painting courses, our curriculum fosters a balance of technical proficiency and creative exploration to develop students’ intellectual capacity and ability to conceive, initiate, and complete original work according to their own vision. The culminating BFA capstone course, FAR 410 Senior Studio in Painting, is an immersive studio experience where students develop an individualized body of work for the BFA exhibition through venues on campus or off campus supervised by the area’s faculty.
The BFA senior exhibition is planned and installed by the students to prepare them for varied aspects of mounting a professional exhibition. No grade will be assigned to the senior exhibition.
The Painting/Drawing program offers well equipped facilities which includes two drawing studios and three painting studios. Additionally, our senior painting students enjoy semi- private/independent painting studio space with maximum access.
No portfolio is required for incoming students, (including both first year and transfer students) who choose to major in the BFA Painting or Drawing minor programs. During their second year of the program, individual reviews will be conducted to assist students on their progress towards their degree.
Incoming first year students and transfer students can declare their major during their admission application process without a portfolio review.
