"This morning I learned of another higher ed initiative that will have a positive impact on this city – this time on the East Side. Students from a SUNY Buffalo Interior Design class have been working with Fillmore Forward to analyze a commercial space at 1474 Fillmore Avenue. The intention is to reimagine the storefront in a way that will create a modern and up to date store that will benefit the owner and the district."

On Wednesday, November 2, Buffalo State students participated in a charrette to help 6th-grade special education students from Palmyra Macedon School District redesign their classroom.  The elementary school students and their teacher received a grant that stipulated that design must be student led with a focus on 21st-century learning.  The charrette was a collaboration between the 6th-grade students, design students, and design professionals.  Design students and professionals volunteered their time and expertise to help the elementary students develop their ideas into practical solutions.

Explore Buffalo is a non-profit organization providing tours and promoting the discovery of the unique architecture, history, and communities of the greater Buffalo Niagara region.  The Department of Interior Design at Buffalo State is proud to partner with Explore Buffalo to provide our students with an unparalleled look at the architectural heritage of Buffalo.  Our students benefit from the opportunity to investigate the built environment through both historical context and formal investigation and Explore Buffalo has provided a valuable platform for their specialized student tours to make this possible.  We are grateful for the generous support of Explore Buffalo.

"I noticed Council chambers were open Thursday even though there was no Council meeting.

It turned out that an interior design class from SUNY Buffalo State College was in the room.

Their professor, architect Eric Dolph, told me the class uses the city as its laboratory.

Students visit different buildings throughout the semester, learning different design techniques by studying such buildings as the former downtown Post Office (now the ECC City Campus),  the Ellicott Square building,  Kleinhans Music Hall, and Thursday,  Council chambers in City Hall."
