President’s Opening Year Address

President Conway-Turner will address the Buffalo State College community at her annual Opening Year Address. She will present highlights from the previous academic year and set the direction for the campus moving forward as the college continues to advance excellence, engagement, and social responsibility as SUNY’s urban-engaged campus. All members of the campus community are encouraged to attend and to join in a reception following the presentation to greet new faculty and staff members.

Animals in the City, Presentation by Kimberly Hart
Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State Executive Board Room
Dogs and cats live in Istanbul's marginal green spaces, in neighborhood backstreets, around tombs and mosques, in cemeteries, and in parks. Surviving in part through human acts of generosity and kindness, animals carve out habitat in this city of more than15 million people. Kimberly Hart, associate professor of anthropology, will discuss how she used photography as a research method to document and represent the animals who live in the city and the processes she used to select images for her exhibit currently on view in Upton Hall's Bacon Gallery.

Exhibit by Marc Duquette, '02, Sandy Bartz, '05, '06, and Brian Porter, emeritus faculty. The work will feature figure and portrait painting and drawing, as well as landscape painting. All three artists' work is realist or representational in manner, but each produces their own style of painting. Reception for the artists: Tuesday, September 18, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Film and Lecture Series: The Mythos and Influence of Frankenstein in Film

Join Zachary Malone, lecturer of English, for a film and discussion series this fall. A short introduction on context, symbolism, and relevant themes pertaining to the film will precede each screening. After each film, there will be time for Q&A and general dialogue. This week’s film is Ex Machina.

Bengals Dare to Care Day

Join Dr. Katherine Conway-Turner as Buffalo State participates in Bengals Dare to Care Day, a morning of service in the community, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with lunch immediately following.
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate and be a part of the Buffalo State tradition! Service projects are identified in collaboration with community organizations across the city of Buffalo and transportation is provided—all you have to do is register. Volunteers will sign up for a project on the day of the event, so don't be late!
